E-Heat utilizes waste heat from data centers

Vatajankoski is a new energy company that creates local solutions with a global impact. Solutions for reducing energy loss, minimizing carbon footprint, optimizing energy use, and reducing costs. Vatajankoski introduces new energy solutions.
E-Heat builds data heating plants utilizing Vatajankoski's network construction expertise. E-Heat was founded in 2021 out of a desire to utilize the waste heat from data centers. The company builds and maintains data centers that capture waste heat generated by server equipment and recycle it for reuse. The captured heat is fed into, for example, district heating networks or directly into the heating systems of large property complexes.
The cooperation between Vatajankoski and E-Heat has been flexible and functional. Problem situations are handled constructively, and solutions are sought quickly in cooperation.

OtsoMax solved harmonic overtones and reactive power

An example of cooperation can be seen in a power quality problem that occurred in a low-voltage space at the Vatajankoski data center. The total harmonic distortion of the current, THDI, was surprisingly high, which caused several other problems, such as an increase in transformer temperature. Capacitive reactive power was also high. It was clear to Vatajankoski and E-Heat that a solution had to be found to improve power quality. The Finnish company OtsoSmart Oy, which specializes in power quality measurements and improving power quality with its own device family, was asked to solve the situation: OtsoSmart, OtsoPro, and OtsoMax.
The OTSOMAX-RACK-600A was installed in a problematic low-voltage room in the summer of 2025. The device was installed in the usual way, in parallel connection without a power outage. The installation took two days, after which OtsoMax began to reduce the THDI value to about 2 percent and improve the cosphi value to +0.995. Capacitive reactive power was eliminated. Energia Europa S.p.A, which manufactures Otso devices, also participated in this project. For all parties, the project was a good and valuable experience from this important undertaking.

The story of the City of Espoo - Launch of cooperation and pilot

The cooperation between Espoo and Otso started in May 2024 with the first meeting, where the OtsoSmart device was presented. Already at that time, experts in Espoo recognised the key advantage of the device: the same device can be used to correct both inductive and capacitive
reactive power.
In the summer of 2024, the cooperation progressed to a pilot when Otso-Demo was installed on 8 July 2024 in the main centre of the Leppävaara swimming hall. During the test period of about a week, it was found that the device works effectively in compensating for both forms of reactive power and produces remotely usable measurement data for monitoring properties.
After the pilot, the installation was dismantled and the device was moved to the next site, but the successful results of the demo quickly led to Espoo's first equipment order and the expansion of cooperation to a property portfolio survey based on power quality measurements.

Expansion, equipment development and current situation

A total of ten audits were carried out during the mapping phase. In four locations, new equipment was not recommended, as either the removal of the old compensation equipment was sufficient or the loads were already close to the power factor of 1. Based on the measurement results, we proceeded to equipment recommendations and deliveries at six locations.
At the same time, Otso's product family expanded with active device development, as OtsoPro devices were also introduced, which, in addition to reactive power, correct current distortion (harmonics 3–13). The equipment was delivered, installed and commissioned smoothly at the Espoo sites. According to Espoo's experts, the new generation of solutions makes it possible to fix problems with a single device without overlapping systems.

The cooperation has continued to expand. At the moment, Espoo has about a dozen Otso devices in use, and a total of about thirty measurements have been made. In connection with the measurements, the condition of the existing compensation devices and blocking coils has also been inspected, and based on the results, more equipment has been budgeted for the sites where the need is greatest.
The latest project in Espoo had 500kVari anti-coil batteries, which had all kinds of repairs in their service history, the worst of which: "The contactors of the 2nd and 5th steps are defective. The 2nd staircase was taken out of use due to the risk of fire, otherwise ok."
After such a maintenance report, the question remains when there is a risk of fire on the next stairs. The compensators were removed and replaced with OTSOPRO-RACK-100K.
